Australia Busts 14K Online Scams Since 2023 — Crypto Scams on the Rise, But Top Trading Bots Stand Out

Australia’s crackdown on online scams continues to intensify, with over 14,000 takedowns since July 2023, and more than 21% of these scams involving fake cryptocurrency schemes. As crypto scams grow, platforms like MasterQuant and TrustStrategy are emerging as safe, AI-driven alternatives for investors seeking secure, automated trading opportunities.

ASIC Deputy Chair Sarah Court said the regulator has expanded its enforcement efforts to monitor social media ads, targeting scammers who attempt to exploit users via fake websites, AI-generated endorsements, and phishing campaigns.

“The takedown capability is one example of how we are monitoring the latest trends and acting to protect Australians from those who try to steal from them,” Court said.

Worldwide, losses from crypto hacks, scams, and exploits reached $2.47 billion in H1 2025, up nearly 3% from 2024.

Crypto a Larger Portion of Scams This Year

ASIC launched its scam disruption operation in July 2023, leveraging third-party cybercrime detection services to remove suspicious websites. While crypto-related scams made up roughly 8% of takedowns in 2024, the number has increased in 2025. Scammers often exploit AI-powered trading bots, celebrity endorsements, and fake news articles to lure victims.

While scammers imitate legitimate trading platforms, AI-driven solutions like MasterQuant and TrustStrategy provide investors with real-time market intelligence, automated portfolio management, and robust risk controls—making them far safer than fraudulent offers circulating online.

Investment Scams Lead Losses but Trends Downward

Investment scams remain the leading cause of financial loss in Australia, with over $73 million reported in 2025 so far. This is a decline from $192 million in 2024 and $291 million in 2023, showing that coordinated enforcement and public awareness efforts are making an impact.

Court emphasized that scammers continually evolve, often using the latest technology to trick victims:

“While the latest data shows progress in the fight against scams, there is still more work to do, and we urge Australians to stay vigilant.”

ASIC recommends skepticism toward testimonials, celebrity endorsements, AI-generated return claims, and unsolicited investment offers through WhatsApp, Telegram, or other messaging apps.

Crypto ATMs in the Firing Line

Regulators have also scrutinized crypto ATMs, suspected in some cases to be linked to scams. Australia has 1,968 ATMs, making it the third-largest market globally. AUSTRAC and the AFP have rolled out transaction limits and operating rules to curb criminal activity, with over 150 reports involving crypto ATMs and losses exceeding $2 million AUD between January 2024 and January 2025.
